What You Need to Know About Bedbugs

Bedbugs are small, reddish-brown, and oval-shaped insects that feed on humans and animals while they sleep. Their bite is red and itchy, often with a darker red spot in the middle. Sometimes they’re found in a cluster or in a straight line. Those who don’t have a bedbug allergy may have bites that are small or unnoticeable, but those who have an allergy might get extremely itchy swollen bumps, hives, or blisters.

Signs of a Bedbug Infestation

Bedbugs are exceptional at hiding, so you probably won’t see them even if you’re looking for them. You can, however, see the evidence they’ve left behind:

  • Small spots on your bed, pillow, clothes, or walls.
  • Small rust-colored spots of excrement on your bed, clothes, and walls.
  • Shed exoskeletons.
  • A slightly sweet but musty odor.
  • Bites on your skin.

It’s easy to mistake a bedbug bite for another type of bug bite, but if you’re frequently waking up with bites on your body, it’s likely to be bedbugs.

Where Bedbugs Hide

Their small size and flat bodies allow bedbugs to hide in lots of places without being seen:

  • In the creases of the bed or couch.
  • Around the tag of the bed or couch.
  • In the cracks of the bed frame.
  • In the headboard.

People who spend time in places with a high turnover rate, such as hotels, apartment buildings, and hospitals, are at an increased risk of getting an infestation in their homes. This is because bedbugs can quickly spread in a building, and they can easily travel from one place to another in clothing, backpacks, and luggage.

What a Professional Can Do To Help

A company that does pest control in Raleigh can do a thorough inspection to find out if there is an infestation of bedbugs and determine exactly how bad it is. Sometimes trained dogs do the inspection because of how skilled they are at detecting bedbugs. If the professionals confirm bedbugs, they remove them using one or more methods.

Heat Treatments

A heat treatment involves heating the entire room with a machine. Bedbugs and eggs die in 90 minutes at 118°F or right away at 122°F. To make sure the room reaches the correct temperature, the machine brings the room to 135°F, and a professional closely monitors the air temperature.

Insecticides

Pyrethrins and pyrethroids: These are the most common chemicals used for removing bedbugs. They are botanical insecticides made from chrysanthemum flowers.

Desiccants: They destroy the waxy protective coating that bedbugs have on the outside of their bodies and cause them to dehydrate.

Biochemicals: Cold-pressed neem oil is the only approved biochemical for removing bedbugs, and it kills them on contact.

Neonicotinoids: A synthetic form of nicotine that causes a bedbug’s nerves to fire continuously until they fail. Bedbugs can not become resistant to this chemical.

Sometimes removing an infestation can take more than one try, but a good pest control company can often eliminate it in one visit, and prevent it from happening again.
